Rendered in a clean, minimalist black line illustration against an airy, naturally toned warm cream backdrop, this meticulously restored print elegantly balances classical folklore with the refined, sophisticated simplicity of early 20th-century European design.

The History: Created during the early 20th century, this captivating line drawing was part of a series of intricate exploratory sketches and banknote watermark designs produced by Leo Gestel (1881–1941). Gestel was a foundational pioneer of the Dutch avant-garde, working alongside figures like Piet Mondrian to introduce Cubism, Expressionism, and Futurism to the Netherlands. This specific illustration showcases Gestel’s profound ability to strip a complex subject down to its purest linear form, where the divine horse symbolizes poetic inspiration, freedom, and boundless creativity. Reimagined here as an elegant exhibition poster for the renowned Seibu Museum of Art in Tokyo, this print honors Gestel’s enduring global legacy.

The Aesthetic: A masterclass in minimalist visual poetry, this composition utilizes a fluid, expressive ink outline to capture the dramatic energy of the rearing winged stallion. Pegasus leaps gracefully from a swirling, organic mass of billowing clouds, his wings outspread as he charges toward a radiant sunburst that fills the upper frame. The stark contrast between the crisp black linework and the serene background creates an instantly scannable, high-contrast display that brings an immediate sense of movement, wonder, and classic academic elegance to a wall.

It is an ideal statement piece for:

Lovers of mythology, classical line art, horse enthusiasts, and admirers of early 20th-century European modernism.

Main bedrooms, calm living rooms, cozy home offices, reading alcoves, or minimalist gallery walls.

Japandi, Scandinavian, modern farmhouse, dark academia, or transitional interiors that value clean lines and timeless organic themes.

Product Details

Artist: Leo Gestel – Vintage Dutch Modernist Poster

Title: Pegasus Flies in Front of a Cloud (Seibu Museum of Art – Tokyo)

Subject: Minimalist Winged Horse Line Art and Sunburst Study

Original Theme: Early 20th-Century Banknote Watermark / Vignette Design

Style: Dutch Modernism / Classic Line Art / Graphic Minimalist Illustration

Museum-Quality Vintage Prints

Our vintage posters are made to order using premium Giclée printing techniques.
