Published in 1834, Oiseaux brillans et remarquables du Brésil (Brilliant and Remarkable Birds of Brazil) is widely regarded as one of the rarest and most exquisite hand-colored bird folios ever produced. Descourtilz was unique among 19th-century illustrators for portraying birds alongside their native food sources, tropical fruits, and indigenous flora rather than in isolated studio poses. Today, original lithographs from Descourtilz’s South American expeditions are preserved in world-class museum archives as celebrated treasures of natural history illustration.

The Aesthetic: A masterclass in tropical color theory, organic texture, and spatial harmony, this composition pairs the radiant saffron-yellow of the troupial’s body with the warm golden rind and delicate coral-pink heart of the guava fruit. Deep forest-green leaves with etched vein structures frame the bird’s graceful posture, while slender brown branches create an inviting architectural rhythm across the canvas. Set against an open, neutral cream backdrop with authentic period calligraphy, this high-contrast print introduces an air of French neoclassicism, natural wonder, and serene biophilic warmth to any interior.

It is an ideal statement piece for:

Birdwatchers, tropical fruit gardeners, botanists, ornithologists, kitchen decorators, and collectors of antique French natural history prints.

Sun-drenched kitchens, dining alcoves, breakfast nooks, quiet home offices, private libraries, entryways, or as a focal point on a botanical gallery wall.

Biophilic, tropical modern, Japandi, French provincial, modern farmhouse, or transitional interior design styles that value warm earthy tones and historic fine art.

Product Details

Artist: Jean-Théodore Descourtilz (French, c. 1796–1855)

Title: Carouge Pacamare sur une branche de Goyavier (Oiseaux brillans et remarquables du Brésil)

Subject: Antique French Natural History Lithograph, Troupial Bird & Guava Branch Study

Original Year: 1834

Style: 19th-Century French Natural History / Vintage Tropical Fine Art

Museum-Quality Vintage Prints

Our vintage posters are made to order using premium Giclée printing techniques.
