Jean-Théodore Descourtilz (c. 1796–1855) spent years documenting Brazil’s exotic birds and flora for royal collections and natural history societies in Paris and Rio de Janeiro. Descourtilz revolutionized scientific illustration by pairing avian subjects with their native botanical hosts—showing parakeets, troupials, and hummingbirds interacting with coffee trees, guavas, and orchids. Published in classic Parisian folios like Oiseaux brillans et remarquables du Brésil (1834) and featured in landmark publications like Le Jardin des Plantes (1842), these hand-colored steel engravings remain celebrated worldwide as timeless masterpieces bridging zoology, botany, and fine art.

The Aesthetic: A masterclass in organic rhythm, vivid color contrast, and natural composition, this artwork pairs radiant crimson, cobalt, and leaf-green feather accents with the rich, glossy reds of ripe coffee cherries. The parakeet’s acrobatic stance creates a playful diagonal movement across the canvas, while the surrounding coffee branch—complete with unripened green cherries and mature dark berries—adds rich botanical texture. Set against an open, naturally aged cream paper background with historic French calligraphy, this high-contrast print introduces an air of classical academic history, coffee culture, and tropical biophilic beauty to any space.

It is an ideal statement piece for:

Coffee enthusiasts, baristas, birdwatchers, parakeet lovers, botanists, tropical plant collectors, and admirers of vintage French scientific illustration.

Kitchens, breakfast nooks, coffee bars, sun-drenched living rooms, quiet home offices, dining alcoves, or as an eye-catching anchor on a botanical gallery wall.

Biophilic, tropical modern, Japandi, modern farmhouse, French provincial, or transitional interior design styles that value rich natural colors and historic artwork.

Product Details

Artist / Illustrator: Jean-Théodore Descourtilz (French, c. 1796–1855)

Title: Perruche à gorge variée sur une branche de Cafeyer (Parakeet on a Coffee Branch)

Subject: Antique French Natural History Lithograph, Parakeet & Coffee Plant Study

Original Era: c. 1834–1842

Style: 19th-Century French Natural History / Vintage Tropical Fine Art

Museum-Quality Vintage Prints

Our vintage posters are made to order using premium Giclée printing techniques.
