Designed around 1910 by master illustrator Leonetto Cappiello—widely regarded as the “father of modern advertising”—this famous artwork was created to promote Angelus, an herbal digestif liqueur produced by the Salesians of Don Bosco.

Centering on Cappiello’s dramatic visual storytelling, the artwork depicts a figure in a bright red cassock clinging playfully to the clapper of a massive, gleaming golden church bell swinging against a midnight-blue backdrop. Meticulously restored to preserve its deep color saturation, luminous metallic highlights, and bold vintage typography reading “LIQUEUR DES SALÉSIENS DE DOM BOSCO” alongside Cappiello’s cursive plate signature, this print serves as a striking focal point for contemporary walls.

The History:Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) revolutionized poster design at the turn of the 20th century by abandoning the detailed, overcrowded style of the 1800s in favor of single, unforgettable figures emerging dynamically from solid dark backgrounds. Working in Paris with famed lithographic printer Pierre Vercasson, Cappiello created bold visual metaphors that immediately captured the attention of passersby on busy city streets. In this advertisement for the Salesian Fathers’ Angelus liqueur, Cappiello plays on the tradition of the Angelus devotional bell rung at dawn, noon, and sunset, connecting the chime of monastery bells to the warmth and spirit of the digestif. Today, original lithographs of Cappiello’s work are celebrated internationally and held in major museum collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Musée Decorative Arts in Paris.

The Aesthetic: A masterclass in high-contrast color theory, spatial tension, and graphic focus, this composition contrasts the lustrous polished brass and gold gradients of the swinging bell against a deep, dark navy field. The vibrant vermilion red robe of the bell-ringer creates a dynamic diagonal vector that draws the viewer’s gaze across the frame, balanced by the bright sunny yellow lettering of “LIQUEUR” at the bottom. Set within a clean off-white paper margin, this high-impact poster introduces an air of French vintage elegance, European history, and artistic charm to any room.

It is an ideal statement piece for:

Lovers of vintage advertising, spirit and cocktail connoisseurs, Cappiello collectors, European history enthusiasts, and admirers of Belle Époque poster art.

Kitchens, dining rooms, home bars, living rooms, quiet home offices, private libraries, or as an anchor piece on a vintage fine art gallery wall.

Art Nouveau, Art Deco, mid-century modern, dark academia, eclectic, or transitional interior design styles that embrace rich jewel tones and historic graphic art.

Product Details

Artist: Leonetto Cappiello (Italian/French, 1875–1942)

Printer / Publisher: Imp.
