Dive into a whimsical, surreal underwater kingdom with this exceptional antique marine biology art print. Originally illustrated in the early 18th century by artist Samuel Fallours and compiled by the Amsterdam publisher Louis Renard, this vibrant plate documents seven exotic, fantastical fish found in the pristine coral waters around the Moluccas (Indonesia) and the East Indies, featuring the striking Ican Hommo and the brilliantly striped Casu-Casu.
Rendered in an incredibly rich, imaginative palette of ruby-reds, checkered ambers, radiant teals, and bold tiger-stripes, each highly stylized marine creature is arranged elegantly against an open, naturally warm ivory backdrop. This meticulously restored print beautifully bridges the boundary between historical natural science and playful artistic wonder, creating a captivating and sophisticated visual anchor for your walls.
The History: First published in Amsterdam in 1719, Louis Renard’s landmark volume Poissons, Écrevisses et Crabes (Fishes, Crayfishes, and Crabs) is legendary as the first book on marine fauna ever printed in full color. The surreal and dazzling illustrations were drawn by Samuel Fallours, a visionary artist and soldier employed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) while stationed in Ambon. Because naturalists in Europe had never seen the intensely neon, psychedelic color combinations of tropical reef fish, many academics initially dismissed Fallours’ vibrant sketches as pure, mythological fiction. Today, modern scientists can accurately identify almost all the tropical species depicted, celebrating this rare collection as a magnificent masterpiece of 18th-century global ocean exploration and Baroque printmaking.
The Aesthetic: A tour de force of historical whimsy and graphic layout, this composition balances seven extraordinarily expressive fish portraits into a clean, double-column array. The top is commanded by a large, prehistoric-looking crimson and lime-green specimen (Fig. 119, the Ican Hommo) with a fierce yellow jaw. Below it, the composition dynamically shifts to feature a checkerboard-patterned fish, a brilliantly tiger-striped oval reef dweller (Fig. 123, the Casu-Casu), a polka-dotted amber fish, and a turquoise bottom dweller with a joyful expression. Completed by authentic, hand-scripted French annotations and the archival plate marking “XXV. Planche”, this high-contrast chart effortlessly infuses contemporary spaces with a sense of historic curiosity and rich, maritime elegance.
It is an ideal statement piece for:
