Bring the theatrical energy, vibrant Italian charm, and iconic Art Deco advertising history of the 1920s into your living space with this exceptional fine art poster. Designed in 1922 by legendary illustrator Leonetto Cappiello, widely celebrated as the “father of modern advertising,” this world-famous poster—titled La Victoria Arduino per Caffè Espresso—was created to promote Pier Teresio Arduino’s revolutionary espresso machines.
Centering on Cappiello’s brilliant visual metaphor for speed, the artwork depicts a stylish traveler in a mustard-yellow overcoat leaning dramatically out of a speeding train carriage window to pull a fresh cup of espresso directly from a gleaming chrome Victoria Arduino espresso machine. Meticulously restored to preserve its bold color saturation, dark background contrast, and original typography reading “LA VICTORIA ARDUINO PER CAFFÈ ESPRESSO”, alongside Cappiello’s plate signature reading “Cappiello 922”, this print serves as a grand, iconic focal point for modern interiors.
The History: Founded in Turin in 1905 by inventor Pier Teresio Arduino, Victoria Arduino transformed European coffee culture by developing high-pressure espresso machines engineered to brew coffee “expressly” (at a moment’s notice) for individual patrons. To convey the unprecedented speed and luxury of espresso to the public, Arduino commissioned Italian-born artist Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942), who was dominating Paris and Milan with his revolutionary advertising style. Cappiello pioneered the technique of isolating a single dynamic figure against a dark, minimalist backdrop to create an unforgettable visual brand identity. His depiction of a passenger catching a steaming espresso from a moving train became one of the most celebrated commercial posters in history. Today, original lithographs of La Victoria Arduino are preserved in major museum collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
The Aesthetic: A masterclass in dynamic action, color contrast, and graphic storytelling, this composition relies on the striking juxtaposition between the luminous mustard-yellow coat of the figure and the deep charcoal background. Cappiello frames the top of the print with stylized lime-green Art Deco typography set inside a billowy cloud of espresso steam. The polished silver contours of the espresso machine and the pops of bright red coffee cups cascading below add a rhythmic color accent. Set within a warm off-white border, this high-impact print introduces an air of vintage Italian sophistication, cafe culture, and timeless graphic art to any room.
It is an ideal statement piece for:
Coffee lovers, espresso aficionados, barista champions, Italian culture enthusiasts, Art Deco collectors, and admirers of vintage advertising history.
Kitchens, breakfast nooks, dining rooms, home coffee bars, living rooms, quiet home offices, cafes, or as an anchor piece on a vintage poster gallery wall.
Art Deco, mid-century modern, Italian modern, eclectic, bohemian, or transitional interior design styles that embrace bold color contrast and historic graphic art.
