Bring the whimsical humor, master draughtsmanship, and celebrated Edo-period artistry of traditional Japanese ukiyo-e into your home with this exceptional fine art print. Created in c. 1848 by renowned master Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861), this famous work—titled Cats Suggested as the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō (Sonomama Jiguchi Myōkai Kō Gotsugi-hiki)—is one of the most beloved and inventive animal prints in Japanese art history.
Designed as a playful parody (mitate-e) of Hiroshige’s iconic travel series, Kuniyoshi depicts dozens of cats in expressive, endearing poses, each representing one of the rest stations along the ancient Tōkaidō highway through clever Japanese wordplay and feline puns (jiguchi). Meticulously restored to highlight its delicate ink linework, soft color washes, and authentic red title cartouches, this vintage print offers a charming, culturally rich focal point for modern walls.
The History: Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861) was a legendary master of late Edo-period ukiyo-e woodblock printing, famous for his dynamic warrior prints (musha-e), mythical creatures, and deeply humorous compositions. Kuniyoshi was famously obsessed with cats, sharing his studio with dozens of felines who frequently served as his artistic muses and lived inside his kimono sleeves. During the Tenpō Reforms of the 1840s, strict government censorship banned explicit depictions of kabuki actors and courtesans, prompting creative artists like Kuniyoshi to devise clever allegories using animals. In Cats Suggested as the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, Kuniyoshi replaced Hiroshige’s famous coastal landscapes with clever feline visual puns: for instance, the station Okazaki became oka-saki (“nibbling on land”), while Mariko became neko-maru (“curled up cat”). Today, original woodblock impressions of this masterpiece are preserved in world-class collections, including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Aesthetic: A masterclass in character animation, feline observation, and graphic rhythm, this print captures cats in every imaginable mood—sleeping, stretching, hunting mice, climbing baskets, licking their paws, and tangling under cozy blankets. Kuniyoshi uses expressive, calligraphic sumi ink brushwork to define each cat’s unique fur markings, from calico and tortoiseshell spots to sleek tabby stripes. The scattered red seal cartouches contain the names of the stations alongside written puns, while the warm, naturally aged paper background gives the composition authentic vintage character. This print introduces an air of Japanese art history, playful storytelling, and cozy warmth to any room.
It is an ideal statement piece for:
